🗨️ Is there any hardware configuration that can increase the performance of Fast Dedup?
Yes. Using a dedicated special dedup vdev, such as a mirror of fast NVMe drives, significantly improves performance. It speeds up access to the DDT, especially during operations like preload or when the DDT doesn't fully fit in RAM.
🗨️ How does Dedup interact with encryption?
Deduplication is fully compatible with ZFS native encryption, you can get both space savings and security.
However, it can not work if the data is already encrypted by the application before it reaches ZFS—because ZFS can't recognize duplicates in that case. For most setups, ZFS encryption works great with Dedup.
🗨️ Are there any tools available to estimate potential Dedup savings and resource requirements—such as RAM usage or recommended special vdev size—for an existing pool or dataset?
ZFS doesn't include a built-in tool for this yet, but community scripts can help estimate dedup potential. With the new rewrite command, it's now much easier to test dedup on real data and see the benefits firsthand.
